Before anything else in this course makes sense, one distinction has to be clear: studying space and operating in space are two different disciplines that happen to share a subject. Space studies is what you get when you stop treating them as one thing.
Studies Space
An observational science. You point instruments at things that are already happening — stars burning, galaxies moving, planets orbiting — and figure out what's going on. You don't touch the subject; you watch it.
Operates in Space
An applied, engineering-and-policy discipline. How do you build something that survives the vacuum, get it there, keep it working, and manage the human and political consequences of having put it there. You don't just watch — you build, launch, and maintain.
Space studies as a field is really astronautics with astronomy as a supporting subject — plus a layer neither of those two names on its own: the policy, law, economics, and history of what happens once humans start actually doing things in space rather than just looking at it.
Not "space stuff" — four real disciplines that happen to converge on one subject.
Orbital mechanics, propulsion, spacecraft systems. The "how do you get there and survive" layer.
What space does to a human body, what life support has to solve. Distinct enough from terrestrial medicine that it's its own research field — it's why NASA's Human Research Program exists.
Who pays for this, who profits, what a "space economy" even means — launch services, satellite data, and eventually resource extraction.
The treaties, the Cold War history, the current geopolitics. This is the layer where "space" stops being a science question and becomes a human-institutions question — which is exactly why SSA-04 is going to be the hardest course in this sequence to write neutrally.
A space studies program — or this self-taught version of one — is basically training you to move across all four layers, instead of specializing in just one the way a pure physicist or a pure policy analyst would.
Most people's mental picture of "space" is almost entirely Layer 1, plus a little pop-culture Layer 4. Illustrative impression, not a measured statistic:
Layers 2 and 3 rarely make it into casual space content — which is a decent opening for a site like this one. There's a lot less oversaturated content competing for attention on "what does microgravity actually do to bone density" or "who owns lunar water ice" than there is on rocket engines.
