JAXA examples have shown up all through this curriculum — Himawari's weather satellites, the H-series rockets, QZSS, Kibo, Tanegashima and Uchinoura. This bonus module isn't part of the official course this site is modeled on, but it's worth adding: the continuous history connecting all of those scattered references into one program.

Before JAXA Existed

Two Separate Agencies

For decades, Japan ran two distinct space programs with different missions, cultures, and even different rockets — not one unified agency.

ISAS

Academic Science

The Institute of Space and Astronautical Science grew out of University of Tokyo rocket research led by Hideo Itokawa, starting from small solid-fuel "Pencil Rocket" experiments in 1955. ISAS stayed close to academia, prioritizing scientific and deep-space missions over practical applications.

NASDA

Practical Applications

The National Space Development Agency, established in 1969, was built as a more NASA-like government agency — focused on practical satellites (communications, weather, navigation) and, initially, on liquid-fuel rockets developed under license from US technology before Japan built its own.

The Merger

ISAS, NASDA, and a third body, the National Aerospace Laboratory (NAL, focused on aeronautics research), merged into a single agency: the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency — JAXA. The merger combined ISAS's scientific mission culture with NASDA's applications and launch-vehicle infrastructure under one roof, which is why JAXA's modern portfolio spans everything from asteroid probes to weather satellites to crewed ISS operations.

Four Milestones

Ohsumi (1970) — Japan's First Satellite

Launched by ISAS's solid-fuel Lambda-4S rocket, Ohsumi made Japan the fourth nation to place a satellite in orbit, after the USSR, the US, and France.

Hayabusa (2003–2010) — Against the Odds

The first mission ever to attempt returning a sample from an asteroid's surface. Hayabusa reached asteroid Itokawa — named for the same Hideo Itokawa above — in 2005, then suffered engine failures and a months-long communications loss. It still managed to return a small sample capsule to Earth in 2010, widely covered in Japan as a dramatic survival story.

Hayabusa2 (2014–Present) — The Refined Follow-Up, Still Going

Reached asteroid Ryugu in 2018, deployed small rovers, fired a small explosive impactor to expose a subsurface sample, and returned that sample to Earth in December 2020 — a far smoother mission than its predecessor, referenced earlier in SSA-01 and SSA-02 as a probe and launch-vehicle example. The spacecraft itself didn't stop there: it's now on an extended mission (SSA-05 Module 5), flying past asteroid Torifune in July 2026.

The H-Series Launch Vehicles

From NASDA's licensed-technology origins through H-I, H-II, H-IIA, and today's H3 (SSA-02 Module 1–2), Japan's launch vehicles trace a direct line from imported components to an independently designed rocket family.

Connecting the Dots

By the time you reach this bonus module, you've already met JAXA's program piece by piece across three other courses.

Himawari's weather satellites (SSA-01 Module 2), Hayabusa2 as a space-probe example (SSA-01 Module 3), Mitsubishi Heavy Industries flying the H3 (SSA-01 Module 4), QZSS/ Michibiki navigation (SSA-01 Module 5), and the Kibo ISS module (SSA-01 Module 6) were all part of the broad-survey course, before any of this history was explained.

SSA-02 then covered the engineering directly — the Epsilon and H-series rockets (Module 1–2), Tanegashima and Uchinoura Space Centers (Module 2), GEO weather and QZSS architecture (Module 4), and Kibo's life-support role (Module 5) — and SSA-03 Module 6 placed Kibo inside the ISS partnership. This module is the history that was underneath all of it the whole time.
