After the Race Ends, What Do You Build?

Once the Moon landing was won, both superpowers shifted from a single dramatic goal toward sustained presence — stations, a reusable spacecraft, and, continuing Module 4's classified thread, an openly acknowledged military space buildup that made space contested strategic territory rather than just a scientific frontier.

Two Approaches to Staying

Skylab vs. Salyut/Mir

Both superpowers moved toward space stations after Apollo — but one treated it as a one-off experiment and the other as sustained institutional commitment.

Skylab

A Single Experiment

The US built one station, converted from a spare Saturn V upper stage, and crewed it for less than a year total across three missions (1973–74). With no follow-up program funded, Skylab was left unattended and re-entered the atmosphere uncontrolled in 1979, scattering debris over Australia.

Salyut / Mir

Sustained Commitment

The USSR flew a whole series of Salyut stations through the 1970s and early 1980s, then Mir (1986–2001) as a single continuously upgraded station — establishing the long-duration spaceflight records and institutional experience that later fed directly into the ISS.

The Shuttle's Design Compromises

The Space Shuttle wasn't built to an engineer's ideal spec — budget and political pressure shaped decisions that mattered later.

Not Actually Fully Reusable

Budget cuts eliminated the original fully reusable two-stage design in favor of an expendable external tank and recoverable-but-heavily-refurbished solid boosters — reusability real, but far more partial than first promised.

Solid Rocket Boosters, By Design

As SSA-02 Module 2 covered, solid propellant can't be throttled or shut off once lit. The Shuttle's boosters carried that same inflexibility — a design trait that turns any ignition-phase problem into one with very few options.

An Externally Mounted, Foam-Insulated Tank

The external fuel tank flew alongside the orbiter, covered in insulating foam meant to stay attached. Foam shedding during ascent was a known, recurring issue for years before it mattered fatally.

Two Losses, Real Causes

Challenger and Columbia

Both accident investigations reached the same kind of conclusion: identifiable engineering causes, and warning signs that existed beforehand.

Challenger

January 28, 1986

A rubber O-ring seal in a solid rocket booster joint failed in unusually cold launch conditions, allowing hot gas to escape and trigger the vehicle's structural breakup 73 seconds after liftoff. The Rogers Commission found engineers had raised cold-weather O-ring concerns before launch — concerns that were overridden.

Columbia

February 1, 2003

A piece of external-tank foam struck and damaged the orbiter's wing thermal protection during launch. The damage let superheated gas penetrate the wing during re-entry, destroying the vehicle. The CAIB found foam strikes were a known, recurring issue that had been normalized as an acceptable risk rather than fixed.

Both boards pointed beyond hardware to organizational decision-making that normalized known risks — the same standard this course applies to the Apollo 1 fire in Module 4: real failures with real, documented causes, not unavoidable tragedies.

The Defense Support Program (DSP) fielded satellites specifically to detect the infrared signature of missile launches — a direct, standing early-warning capability against nuclear attack.

Photo-reconnaissance satellites kept evolving well past CORONA's film-canister era, moving toward the digital, near-real-time imaging systems that underpin later intelligence programs.

The Strategic Defense Initiative (1983)

Reagan's proposed space-based missile defense system — nicknamed "Star Wars" — was the era's most publicized and controversial military space concept. Most of its most ambitious elements were never built as originally envisioned, but it marked space defense as an open policy debate, not just a classified program.
